CHAPTER SEVEN
NATE
Warm bodies pummeled us on either side as I pushed my way through the masses overflowing from room to room as the party ramped up. Raleighâs fingers curled around mine, her other hand clasped to my wrist in an effort to hold on and not lose me. Not that there was any chance of that happening. She was mine to nightâevery damn night, if I had my way. I didnât know where the craving for her stemmed from, but I wasnât in a position to want to deny it.
I'd been rougher than I intended with her, but hell if I hadn't wanted anyone half as much since I took Lizzie French to the prom and saw her for the first time in a pale oyster shell blue dress.
Raleigh looked nothing like my high school fantasy of a pretty, skinny girl hiding a spoiled brat attitude, and twice as stunning.
Her warm hand wrapped around mine gained confidence with each step as we made our way from the frat party.
Like she hated the gatherings as much as me, if just maybe not for so different reasons from what my little stalker self learned about her.
Perfect.
We crossed the lawn area around the house, skirting through a short garden that led to the edge of the forest. Rippton bordered a desert on one side, the highway back to western Cali on the other. But a small section of secluded native woodland flowed around the dorms to the north eastern corner of the grounds.
By the time I made it to the end of my first week on campus, I already had my fill of house sharing and the constant noise. A small town boy at heart, I just wanted to play lacrosse. Maybe drink a few beers with mates. Have time to get lost in my own head for the rest of it. Study was almost an afterthought. But that time apart from everyone else... To me that was where it was all at.
Somehow, Raleigh factored into my dream life just fine, without the intrusion of the power plays and bullshit meetings and hook ups Beau and his clan preferred.
Raleigh caught up with me as I hit the edge of the forest, falling into step at my side.
"Where are we going?"
I shortened my stride to better match hers, so she wasn't so out of breath. She sent me a little smile that left me desperate to kiss her again.
"Somewhere I found a few weeks ago. I need to get out of that." I jerked a thumb backward over my shoulder in the direction of the frat still blasting music and an excess of hormones into the air.
The moment we stepped into the forest the trees closed around us, muting the sound and leaving space to breathe.
âAnd here I picked you as the all-American party boy with his eye on the lacrosse captain's spot next year when Beau graduates.â Raleigh played with my wrist, sliding her thumb across the back of my hand.
A shiver worked its way along my spine while I tried to play it cool.
